PROMO BANNERS - Animation?

Hi all / Guten Tag!

I would like to know if anyone has been successful in incorporating or otherwise being able to have animation taking place in a banner (/out/pictures/promo/)?

Could animated gifs or flash work? if so are there any secrets?
